Job Description

The essential function of the position within the organization is to transcribe verbatim digital records of court proceedings. The position is responsible for assigned transcriptions/recordings. The position works under direct supervision according to set procedures.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Transcribing, proofreading, editing and preparing final transcripts of digitally recorded court and deposition proceedings in compliance with applicable standards, regulations and statutes
  • Monitoring and annotating digitally recorded court proceedings while proceedings occur
  • Generating and providing copies of digitally recorded court proceedings to various parties upon request
  • Maintaining log books, schedules and calendars as needed
  • Receiving assigned transcriptions and digitally recording court proceedings

Education and Training Guidelines

  • High School Graduate or equivalent and one year of vocational or community college education in English grammar, stenographic or secretarial work
  • One year of related experience
  • Relevant experience may substitute for one year of education
  • Must attain certification from the American Association of Electronic Reporters and Transcribers (AAERT) within one year from the date of employment

Performs skilled work involving rules/systems with almost constant problem solving; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results and occasional exposure to unusual pressure.

 

Impact of Decisions:

Makes decisions with moderately serious impact - affects work unit and may affect other units or citizens.

 

Equipment Usage:

Handles machines, tools, equipment, or work aids involving moderate latitude for judgment regarding attainment of standard or in selecting appropriate items, such as recorders, duplicating equipment, vehicles or copiers.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the legal system
  • Knowledge of transcript formatting rules
  • Ability to type accurately and pay attention to detail
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other court personnel and outside agencies, legal professionals, litigants, and the general public

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Work involves lifting of a minimum of 20 pounds, listening, reading, standing, talking, walking, and a significant amount of typing and sitting
  • Hear and distinguish words of various tones and volume
  • Eye, ear and hand coordination
